Hello all you beasties out there!
I'd like to thank those of you taking on the much needed and possibly less noticed role of the animals of Pern. Both NPC and PC chracters are very important to the overall feel as the People of Pern were very attached to their animals. For those of you who may not know, this part of the Forum is for you to use to discuss how to best use the tools you have at your disposal to play your role. it may be a place to look for a human to impress if you are one that wants that, or an "owner"  and by that term I mean it in the sense that I own my cats (or rather think I do, in all truth I am their person) You can even use it to set up and pass along the best pranks to pull on the unsuspecting two legged things. All sorts of things.
I'm currently tracking as people who want to have beasts as full time characters
Stripey, Bigbaddaboom,  and William as firelizards.
I heard rumor of some dolphins?
If I'm missing anyone please IM me inworld so I can add you to the list.
Oh and Myth has just signed on as the RunnerCraft master. So those interested in being or riding runnerbeasts, contact her for word on that

Thanks everyone

Nekome,

I just want to make sure I have my PC and NPC characters in the right categories. And I know that roles have been developing and changing. Here is my question.

-Are dolphins and firelizards primary characters now? My guess is yes  the Dolphins are primary characters. I'm not too sure about the firelizard status.

You wrote that "Stripey, Bigbaddaboom,  and William" are listed  "as firelizards". This makes me think that some people may be planning to play firelizrds as primary characters. I thought that originally firelizards were going to be NPC. I was wondering if firelizards can now be developed into primary characters? Thanks for any insight you can give me.

reality is what you perceive it to be

Any beast can be either a primary or an NPC.  NPC do not develop relationships, bond or are recurring - they are generic, or "wild."  I'd like to leave this vague and trust to the membership to not abuse it.  If we find there are folks playing multiple PCs on one account then we will address it again.

Hrmm. Now I'm not sure how this will work. My friend Meissa Thorne has an Impressed fire lizard planned for her character. So does this mean she needs a separate player to RP the fire lizard?

Or can she use it like... how do I explain this... like people use "puppets" on oldschool text-based MUD, MUSH, etc.? She has a wearable mini-dragon she was figuring she'd use when the fire lizard is around.

So with the "puppet" concept, her poses might be like this:
Meissa says, "______." Meanwhile, her bronze fire lizard steals another bit of food from her dinner plate.

This fire lizard was going to be friendly with my character, too, so I'd probably take the same approach if he's around.

Are we totally off-base with this approach? And what does this mean in terms of PC vs. NPC categorization?

See Kai's profile in SL for basic IC information about this character.

There's no reason someone can't use a follower or shoulder pet as an NPC.  The only thing you'll have to watch out for is lag.  Those things can be a big drain on the sim, particularly if everyone is wearing one.  Wearing them in low lag situations would be fine, but in high lag situations like when the sims are full or there is threadfall or an event happening, it's best to rp that the poor thing takes off around crowds.

Ah, good to know. And, if it's just a sculpted shoulder pet and isn't scripted to do anything (or scripts are off) that shouldn't cause any more lag than a typical prim attachment... But of course I know that's an "if"! We'll watch out for it. Thanks.

Well, I'm one of our part time mystery dolphins. Smiley

Kind of been busy, so I haven't been around as much...but I will pop in when I can if there's people needing to be splashed. Smiley

I have one of the green Pern hatchlings. I was wondering if it would be OK for me to play her as an NPC sometimes, just for fun. The assumption would be that she has an NPC rider.

Why? I need an av that I can fly with, and it would take me awhile to make a firelizard av.

Newp.  Dragons are the only beasts that can't be played NPC.  They are primary chars only.  You could play a NPC wherry or a bird, insect, or a watchwher.  They can all fly.

I've been trying to make a firelizard so as to have a flying NPC. I have not found one that I like yet. I have a dolphin that I can use  as a swimming NPC. If anyone knows of a flying av that would suit Pern please let me know.

SO far the firelizards have been constructed of numerous other avs. The best I've seen are bodies from Dino Island. I can get a landmark to anyone who wants it. You can fit wings onto it from whatever av you like. Etherworld, the dragon maker, is planning Firelizards once the dragons are out, but that will be a while as the larger dragons are taking some time.

I'm probably going to have to make some rules about the followers people are using.  Most of them are lag monsters, although most of the shoulder pets aren't too bad.  The followers, however, are generally horrible in terms of lag.  10 of them on the same sim will grind it to a near halt...some of the models are even worse.

I agree with nekome, the nargus asturia compy dinosaur avatar is visually one of the closest out there, although it's a bit on the laggy side, too.  I have a nc that Stripey Larkin made that details how to add wings from other avatars to it.  I think there is one that has been stripped of scripts perched over a nest and under a bush on the tiny island on shaula that marks the sim border corner (shaula/gianfar/thuban) if anyone wants a look at them.

I'm working on a firelizard sculpty too, but who knows when I'll be able to get it done.  And Meissa made a kewl firelizard shoulder pet.

I got a compy, put wings on it, and stripped the scripts, losing some functionality. Now I am trying to figure out how to get that back. It looks like Compy put some of the AO stuff in the skin change scripts.

Since Del's fire lizard is such an important part of his character, I created a Second Life character for him.  I got the compy for now, but I have a pair of "toy dragon" wings from DragonWorks before they disappeared that look pretty good.  I don't know if anyone has any better (and I'd welcome them if so!), but these seem to be full perm if anyone wants them.  Just do a people search for "Willow Messenger" and you can see them in his profile.  Does anyone have a decent wing flapping animation?

Del,
animations are tricky cause you have to see what the rest of the av position is and how it effects it. But I can do custom animations if you show me what it looks like. Fire lizard avatars are #1 on the list once the dragons series is finished as well.
