excerpts from Moira's log for the sevenday 8/20 - 8/26/17 (old calendar)

While at the Market Place at the beginning of the sevenday:
- Purchased peppermint herbs. at the request of the Voice Master, from the Healer's booth for singers with scratchy voices.  MasterHealer John suggested one teaspoon per cup of tea.  He also suggested drinking more non-alcoholic beverages, telling me that wine is part of the reason for hoarseness and scratchy throats.
- Visited the Tanner's booth and ordered a new leather sack for one of my lutes.  It should be ready in a 7-day or so.
- Visited the Cheese booth and purchased some rounds of cheese for the Hall (a special request by the Hall Headwoman. Unfortunately the first purchase was stolen from the Harper's booth while we were distracted by the a fire set in the dining booth by a wild flit.  Coiln saw the theft and attempted to chase the thief (someone relatively recent to our part of the island, going by the name of Dutch).

I noticed that Dutch made himself scarce when the Lord Holder appeared, which made me a bit suspicious.  I also heard some of the trades people at the market talking about some strange looking wooden marks.

During the sevenday:
- Spoke with Learn Master Tristin regarding this "Dutch" and his behavior at the market, as well as the reports regarding strange marks.
- Gave the peppermint, along with the instructions on using it for tea to the Voice Master.  Also passed on the advice from Master Healer John regarding wine consumption.  The Voice Master gave the peppermint to the Headwoman, for her to dispense as needed.
- Reviewed the staff lists and started preparation on a new hide to be sent out with the current staff names of people in residence at Harper Hall  (Apprentices will make copies of it to be sent to other Craft Halls, Hold and Weyr once it has been completed).
- Began further research in the archives to pull out items for continued work on our History scrolls.
- Worked too late, engrossed in the archives, and missed dinner.  Rather than bothering our cook for a late dinner, I decided to walk over to the Runner's Rest to grab some meat pies.  I needed the fresh air and the walk, anyway.

To my surprise (and delight!) Master Healers John and Rodney were also having dinner at Runner's Rest, so the three of us ate together.  Apparently they have a new cook that isn't very skilled in cooking.  I offered to speak with the Hall headwoman to see if perhaps our cook could help the healer's new cook with a few pointers.

I mentioned that I had overheard some of our apprentices talking about seeing a dragon fly over during the day, and had been arguing about what color it was - some thought bronze, some thought not.  Master Healer John said that his cousin had sent him a message by firelizard about it, and that he was pretty sure it was a gold.  Hmmm....

excerpts from Moira's log for the sevenday 8/27 - 9/2/17 (old calendar)

Spoke with our Headwoman about sending our cook over to Healer Hall a few times in order to give the Healer's new cook some pointers.  She agreed, but not to happily.  She will take care of making the arrangements for this.

An apprentice from Tanner Craft stopped by and delivered the new lute bag that I had ordered at the market.  She was enroute to a delivery and the Weyr.  She stopped by again, on her way back from the Weyr, supposedly so she could rest her runner beast and have a hot meal.  She did keep looking around, so I asked her if she was looking for something or someone in particular, and she blushed and said something about a male Harper she had seen at the Weyr...  Apparently she didn't know he was assigned there, and thought he might be at the Harper Hall when she stopped by on her journey home.   She tried to pay for her meal, and I told her no, it was part of our hospitality.  She told me that when she had eaten at the Weyr, they took the cost of the meal out of the payment for the items she had delivered.  I was very surprised to hear that, and am sure that the Master Tanner will not be happy about that.

Originally, I had planned on hitching a ride over to the Weyr with the Tanner Apprentice, to check in with Journeymen Una and Ardrhys, but I convinced myself I had last minute reasons as to why I needed to not go to the Weyr.  I later realized that I have to stop coming up with reasons to avoid the Weyr and dragons...  I thought that writing about it might help me get over that.

Later, I decided to put my new resolve to the test and went over to the Weyr, hoping to find Journeymen Una and Ardrhys, so that I could ask them if they have seen any more sign of the holder who stole the cheese bag.  (I had been keeping look-out around the Hall, but hadn't seen any sight of him).  While I was standing in the bowl, in a daze outside of the Hatching Grounds entrance, Alandri from the Weyr was out walking, lost in thought, and practically ran into me.  It took me a few minutes to recognize her, but then I remembered we had talked back when Saarith had been very young - she was quite helpful back then with advise about Golds.  I later remembered that we now had something else in common, both having had lost Golds. We ended up having dinner in the Weyr Dining Hall (and I was able to hold up fairly well with the help of some wine) and we had a good conversation, ending with an intriguing conversation about whatchwhers, of all things.

OOV

I met with Learn Master Tristin to update him on what had happened when I was out at the Weyr - the theft that had occurred there, the stranger that had been present, my finding of the hides hidden away under some rocks, and the apprehension of the stranger by Del at the Weyr.

I told Learn Master Tristin of the attempts I had made to get some more background about the stranger (where he was from and so forth) and the evasiveness of the stranger's answers.  I also told him about the times the stranger started to say something and then stopped mid-sentence, changing what he was in the process of saying.  He also kept trying to pass the thefts off as "holder boyz on a lark".

It seems to me that the thefts started around the time the stranger first appeared, and though I'm not certain, I have suspicions that this stranger was the one who stole the cheese from the Harper Stall at last market, as well.

Depending on what path the Weyr decides to take with the stranger, Harper Hall may be called upon to provide counsel, if the Weyr decides a trial is called for.   This is an area that Journeyman Ardrhys is interested in, so Learn Master Tristin may appoint him to participate, if there should be a trial.

I haven't heard of any talk of further thefts since the stranger was apprehended, so he very well may be the thief.

OOV - Excerpts from Moira's log for seven-day ending September 16, 2017 (old calendar)

It has been a worrisome seven-day.  When I went out to the Weyr at the beginning of the seven-day, I did not at all expect to find what I found.  I had been expecting to meet with some of the Senior Weyr leaders and participate in a Hearing for the accused thief.  I did not expect to find him out on the floor in the Dining Hall, obviously very sick  (and making a huge mess on the floor).  I did not expect him to be nearly incoherent, though we did deduce some things (if his ramblings were in fact true).  As soon as I returned to the Hall, I immediately bathed and changed clothes.  I was contemplating burning the clothes I had worn at the Weyr, but instead put them to soak and washed them right away.  Hopefully I will not regret that choice.

The next morning I met with Learn Master Tristin to update him on the events, and to let him know of areas I had concerns about:
 - the ship the stranger had been on
        - where did it come from, did it intentionally head for Gianfar, or was it accidently blown our direction, as Shanna the Fisher had said was possible;
        - what about the others on the ship - from his ramblings, it appeared the ship was caught in the open during thread fall, and everyone else had died - will we find bodies washed up along the shore?  Hopefully the sweep riders will have been instructed to look carefully along along the coastlines.

    - the illness - DragonHealer Master Rodney thinks it may be the flu, but what if it isn't, or what if it is a different strain than we've had out here?  How much danger might we be in from having been in relatively close contact with him.

    - the leather band that had been around his neck with the number 21 on it - what does that mean? (or does it even have meaning?)  Was he a prisoner? and if so, what were his crimes?

I think we all need to be on guard and very careful if anyone in the Hall should become ill.

The rest of the seven-day was uneventful.  We have not had anyone here, yet, become ill, and I have not heard anymore reports or rumors about thefts, so that is reassuring, I suppose.   I spent most of the remainder of the seven-day in the archives, mostly by myself.

I do need to send a note to Journeyman Una.  I know it is hard moving to a new location, with a different structure of hierarchy, especially when you go back in a different slot in it than you had been in previously.

Moira sits down and writes out a response to Una's report, and then sends it off to Una, via her flit Ming
===================================================================================

Journeyman Una,

I'm glad that you are getting settled in.  In regards to your concerns, first, I think that whenever a Harper is assigned to a new location, there will be a period of adjustment required - both from the Harper and from those already present.   In your situation though, there is more to it, as you had come from there before coming here and working your way up to Journeyman Harper.

For those that have welcomed you back with open arms, treasure them, because they are truly friends and knowing that will help you through the rougher spots.  They may also help turn the opinions of others - not so much explicitly, but through how they interact with you and through how they talk of you to others.

There are always some will be wary of Harpers, especially newly appointed ones.  It usually just takes them some time to get used to having you around and to get used to your personality.  I think that there is still some number of folk out there who are just suspicious of Harpers, thinking that we may be some type of spy (for whom though, I couldn't say - it's just a reaction I've noticed over time).  It's best, I've found, to not ask this type of lot of specific questions about their activities, which might confirm in their minds that you are a spy or not to be trusted.  (Who knows what you will do with that information about them!)

The ones who appear angry may just be jealous.  You got to leave the kitchen and cooking duties behind and go off on (what may seem to them as) wonderful adventures.  Sometimes the adventures (and supposed fun and care free life) of Harpers are exaggerated in others minds, especially when compared to cleaning the pots, again, or cooking for hundreds of hungry riders, day in and day out.

My advice for the last two groups is to first, be yourself - don't go out of your way to try and change your behavior in order to change how they treat you.  Second, be professional in carrying out your Harper duties and responsibilities.  You have a wonderful, warm personality.  Over time, I think you will begin to feel that you fit in better, and will begin to be accepted by more of the weyrfolk that are currently stand-offish or appear angry to you. You don't have to prove anything to anyone over there at the Weyr; you've already proven yourself here at the Hall.

Music and dance bring joy to people, as well as providing an outlet for them to forget their daily drudgery and just have some fun.  Over time, they will begin to associate thoughts of you with thoughts of the happy and relaxing times a Harper provides by music or songs.

Children are precious treasures.  They have a way of helping us heal, just by being themselves, as we do our job in teaching them. I think also, as the children begin to trust and respect the Harper, that rubs off onto the other adults they associate with, and makes it easier for the adults to begin to trust and respect the Harper.

I hope that these words will help you, and please do not hesitate to send a note if your concerns grow or if you are just in need of someone to listen to you.  I have found too, that sometimes just writing about what we are feeling helps us to better understand and handle the feelings.

~ Master Moira

(OOV)  excerpts from Moira's Journal.... for seven-day Sept 17 - Sept 23, 2017

I traveled out to the Weyr at the beginning of the seven-day to provide some guidance on some research they are doing over there in their old records.  While I was there, the stranger attempted an escape, but was caught and returned to the Infirmary.  He seemed physically in better shape, but his mind doesn't appear to be, yet.  He still seems unable to carry on a conversation, mainly still rambling.  It is hard to tell if the rambling is intentional, or if not, whether he's speaking of recent experiences or maybe even imagined experiences.  Time will tell, I suppose, but each encounter with him seems to lead to more questions... rather than any answers.

Learn Master Tristin asked to speak with me after I returned, inquiring as to the stranger's health and what the stranger has been saying. The Justice Master was also present, and asked me to ask Journeyman Ardrhys to start preparing for if and when a trial was decided upon.  Learn Master Tristin did not share any of his thoughts with me about the situation, but I have noticed that there have been more meetings of the Harper Quintet than normal during this seven-day, as well as more frequent meetings with the Drum Master, and I have seen a few people that I have not seen before arriving at the Hall and being escorted to Learn Master Tristin's office, to meet with him and the Drum Master. .

Questions keep poking into my mind, making it hard for me to concentrate on tasks.  All the recent trips to the Weyr have really tested my resolve about keeping myself composed, in terms of missing Saarith. The hole in my soul is still there (as I expect it always will be) but it is making its emptiness felt more this last seven-day.  Then there is the ongoing mystery around the stranger, and the tension that Una has mentioned feeling at the Weyr (which I'm beginning to wonder if it may have some secrets or mystery of its own).  I'm probably reading more into things than I should, but even with thinking that, the questions still come unasked for and unwanted in my thoughts.  And a new question has poked through the surface recently - I almost hesitate to even write it out.  I think I have mentioned to people when it's come up in conversation, or acknowledge when someone asks, that I came from the Mainland, but except for my initial meeting with the Lord Holder, I've never mentioned how that happened to be - I imagine that most would just think that I came as a stowaway.  But I didn't - and this is the question, which I'd always just accepted as a mystery that didn't need to be solved, but in light of recent events, now I'm wondering... How did my father know of a small ship that knew of Gianfar, and how was he able to get me on it as a passenger?   ((OOC - Moira isn't going to voice this last concern, or share the story - it's more of an internal struggle for her.  She will remain outwardly certain that Gianfar's existence will remain secret, but internally, her confidence may be a bit shaken.))

The seven-day ended with a different type of surprise, and one that I'm am still trying to figure out how I feel about, besides "Too Soon!"  I took a break from the tasks that I was not able to concentrate on, and went down by the water, to try to relax.  While I was sitting there, all of a sudden i felt a pair of hands cover my eyes.  I screamed and reached up to push the hands off, and recognized the feel of a scar along the outside edge of the thumb.  Taggart!  A friend from the little hamlet I was posted to as a Journeyman.  After giving him a piece of my mind for scaring me, I asked him what he was doing over on this side of the island.  He told me a story about being sent to Fisher Hall, for some reason or another, and that he decided to stop at Harper Hall (as it was *almost* on his way) to see if I was around.  One of the apprentices told him I was out by the water.  We ended up going over to the Runner's Rest for a few drinks and to catch up, before he headed back to the other side of the island.  Oh! I almost forgot.  When we were at Runner's Rest and I handed Tennar's daughter some marks for our food, she looked at them very closely, and even spilled some liquid on one of them, rubbing it with her finger.  I don't know what that was about, but it's another little thing to tuck away with the other mysteries.

 Excerpts from Moira's journal for seven-day 9/24 - 9/30/17

Near the end of the previous seven-day, Harper Hall came into possession of a writing hide which appears to have been written by the accused man out at the Weyr.  He had been visited by another Journeyman earlier that seven-day, who, while she did not get the story from him, left him some writing materials.  Much of the details of his story are being kept in confidence, but I understand that the Harper Quintet did authorize the Drum Master to utilize his news network to try to confirm some of the details. They were able to confirm that Bitra Hold is the hold that has a practice of reducing prisoners to a number, rather than calling them by their names, which confirms the man's story that he was a prisoner at Bitra.  It also appears that some prisoners were taken from the mines in the summer to help with fishing, so that confirms his story about how he ended up on a boat.  There were rumors of a fishing boat with prisoners on it, which did not return and was thought to have been lost at sea.  It was also shared (not from the news sources, but from the writing hide that was received), that he had been trained in Beast Craft (which would explain some of his ramblings and concern about the injured herd beast the day he had been returned to the Weyr infirmary after his attempted escape) and that the reason he ended up as a prisoner was not due to criminal activity on his part, but a series of some unfortunate events.

As has been mentioned in other reports, and in the notes Una had prepared from her scribe activities of the interview, we were able to interview the man at the beginning of this seven-day.   There was one point in the interview that really affected me.  He was already becoming upset over not being able to remember his name prior to being '21', and we asked about a wife, and he broke down and sobbed.  Knowing what grief and loss feels like, I could tell that he was experiencing genuine sorrow.  We have his story, so we know what happened, but I don't feel this should be shared unless the man either shares it himself at some point, or asks us to share it.

As has also been reported elsewhere, we were fortunate to have the help of an old miner by the name of Naynomen, who had worked in the old mines, when it was still being worked.  Quite a character! We were able to find the man's hide-out, and we burned what we found there, as tunnel snakes had been through there and everything was pretty slimy.  It was dark in there, but by the glow lights and the flickering light from the bonfire we built, one of the sleeping rags looked very similar to one of my winter skirts, cut length-wise to be used as a blanket. At first I felt a bit of anger, but then I cooled down, remembering things I learned from my childhood.  As we had traveled around, not being part of any hold, we encountered a variety of people, in a variety of circumstances.  Fortunately we never had any big issues from some of the more criminal types, but we did meet a fair amount of people who just seemed to attract misfortune.  My mother always stressed that we try to understand the person and their circumstances, and that where we could, it did not hurt to share, when we had more than enough already.

Journeyman Una, Journeyman Ardrhys and I met earlier this morning to discuss the the man's situation and some general discussion about trial proceedings, as there have not been any trials so far, during our tenure at Harper Hall. I think that both Ardrhys and I hope that someone from the Weyr might take on the prosecution, or at the minimum, that the Justice Master might appoint some other Journeymen to participate in the trial. ((OOC - NPC character(s) to be played by either one or both of us)).

I am feeling very conflicted right now.  It is easy to get caught up in the man's stories and ramblings, and to see him perhaps as a person who has encountered bad timing, bad luck and severe loss in his life.  However, that does not justify stealing goods from others, either.  I wonder if he will be able to settle down here and lead a productive life.  His mentions of 'heading south' worry me some - will he be content to stay here after the trial and its outcome or will he still want to get away to somewhere where he perceives there will be less structure and rules?

I'm also concerned about another person appearing here from the mainland, such a short time after Qat's arrival, who seemed to be aware of the Eastern Islands, even if he didn't know they were populated, and my own story.  Are we really as protected and secret as we imagine?  I think back to the rumors Journeyman Una recently reported from the Weyr, rumors that we must be known to the mainland.... and wonder...   and I wonder how we can best combat those rumors...

Since my chance meeting with Alandri several seven-days ago, I continue to be interested in finding out more about watchwhers, and have been looking for mention of them as I search through the archives.  The only thing I've found so far was from before the current Pass started.  There was a mention that a watchwher had been sold to someone from the Trader's clan.  It would be interesting to find out what their experience had been with the watchwher, and if they still have it.

I have to admit that I have been thinking of Taggart, out at the far hamlet a little more often, since his surprise visit last seven-day.  It's quite a way from Firelizard Island, which it sounds like might be the first point of landing for the man, but I hope none of the boat he had been on, or any of the other people that had been aboard it, have washed up near the hamlet.  I shudder to think of any of the children out there coming across the remains of a person.  I wish that I had asked Taggart if anyone in the hamlet has been able to find any flit eggs and impress a flit.  I would feel more comfortable if I knew that I could communicate with someone at the hamlet by flit, especially in these un-restful times we seem to be having.

Excerpts from Moira's Harper Hall log for the seven-day ending Oct 7, 2017.

What a seven-day this has been!  I didn't have to go out to the Weyr this seven-day.  The Justice Master appointed Journeyman Ardrhys and Journeyman Lina to represent and prosecute the man (I suppose I should call him Theman, now).  Ardrhys was to represent him, and Lina was to prosecute.   Journeyman Una was there to act as Scribe, and Del was present to inform the other's of the Weyr's current position on the matter of the thefts.

Because Lina knew I had an interest in the situation with Theman, she came and looked me up once she returned to Harper Hall, and gave me all the details.  She was very excited, and I had to ask her to slow down several times.

I was glad to hear that the Weyr decided not to prosecute, and that an acceptable settlement to 'repay' them for their time expended in caring for Theman was worked out and agreed upon.  I think that this leniency, and an opportunity to work in the beast craft may help Theman in acclimating and settling down here.

The other news though, was her story about a strange man who had been sleeping in the corner of the weyr the whole time the other proceedings had been going on.  Someone looking for a Gold rider by the name of Alana.  She really got excited with this part of the tale, and I had to stop her several times to ask some questions, to make sure I was hearing all the details correctly.   She also mentioned that one of the Weyr's riders was also present, and everyone seemed to think that the rider might have known who this person, Tajad, was, that was supposed to be meeting this 'Alana' at sunset, and how the rider had asked 'which sunset'. which confused everyone else.

Other than making sure I got all the information that Lina knew, I tried to not show to much more interest in this latest development.  After Lina left, however, I spent some time going over all the information in my head, trying to get it sorted and organized in my mind:
    - Tajad did not think that he had the wrong weyr, even after hearing that there were no Jr. Weyrwomen there presently, and that the current Weyrwoman was not named Alana.
    - The rider (whom Lina did not catch the name of - perhaps Ardrhys or Una will know) appeared to know the person, but that could have also been the rider trying to ease the situation in front of the others and create a space for Tajad to calm down.  (Lina said he was wearing knives.)
    - If you know dragons, you know that 'which sunset' was a relevant question.  Dragons don't think about time in the same way humans do, especially if they are timing it.   So, that leads to wondering if Tajad appeared too late or too early...  and was he dropped off by a dragon who had been timing it...
    - Alana.  I don't remember ever seeing or hearing that name, but there's something about it that my mind keeps trying to remember or associate with it.   The only thing close, would be Alandri....  but she was a Wing Leader...   but...   I just realized that there is a lot about Alandri that I don't know, or don't understand.  It almost seems like she's here sometimes, and other times like she's just arriving after being gone for awhile...   and sometimes I don't understand all of her little asides, especially when they seem to be about eggs, or Golds rising.  Hmmm.... a lot more to think about here than just watchwhers.
    - Una's feeling that something is going on at the Weyr.  This unsettled feeling she's picking up on could very well be something besides the worries about people finding there way here from the Mainland.  This stranger Tajad, and this mysterious Gold rider Alana could be related to whatever is causing the uneasiness Una is sensing.

In hindsight, I wish that the Justice Master had sent me over to the Weyr rather than Lina.  She is a promising Journeyman, and the Justice  Master was quite right in determining that she was ready for the task assigned to her, but she also can be very excitable and does not always know when to play down an incident.  Apparently she likes to socialize over at the Runner's Rest in the evenings, and she gave a few indiscriminate re-tellings about Tajad being there in the weyr, and who he was looking for, and I'm worried that some of the details may have been embellished a bit.

Anyway, by the end of this seven-day, the story about Tajad and the missing Alana, and how strange he and the rider talked to each other, was all over the area over here.  Not just the staff here at the Hall, but also among holders who frequent the Rest.  I've had to gently correct a few of the re-tellings that I've been told, suggesting that Tajad, in fact, did not actually draw a knife, and suggesting that since the Rider knew him, and that the Weyr was getting a room ready for him to stay the night in, that we should stop gossiping about it, as it appears to be Weyr business and we should leave it at that.

It may be something that we will end up needing to be concerned about, but idle gossip is not the best way to handle it, especially when we know so little about what is actually going on.  Unfortunately, now that the story has been shared and embellished, it will be hard to keep people from talking about it.

I have to travel out to the hamlet on the far coast for a seven-day or two, but when I return, I may see if I can make arrangements to go over to the Weyr to continue helping out with some of their archives.  This will also provide an opportunity for me to gauge the feelings over there, and to see if I can learn anything more about what led to Tajad's appearance, and if there was a Gold rider Alana somewhere in the past or not.  Though I have found that even searching through old records generally results in more questions than answers these days...

Entry from Moira's Journal   (OOV 12/20/17)

Harper Hall seems unusually subdued this seven-day - classes are still being held, apprentices are still given to bouts of hilarity and wild activity common with the young, yet, especially among the Masters, there is a more than normal undercurrent of seriousness.

Learn Master Tristan has asked me to keep a list of the unusual events that started several seven-days ago, so that we don't miss anything that may be important and so that we can view the whole set of events as we decide on actions that Harper Hall will take or initiate.   I've been going through all my hide scraps to make sure I have not forgotten any incident:
    - 2 hide scraps both found on or dropped by seemingly wild flits in the Weyr Bowl.  Both included coded letters in drum code which were eventually decoded as JTML - Join the Mainland.  One scrap also contained a map fragment of a portion of coastline, as well as the word "Gianfar".   It is likely that the flits were not wild, but impressed by holders somewhere on the island.  (Some of Colin's relatives in the hill country and impressed flits and use them for communicating with others, so it follows that other holders could be doing so as well).
    - Several old hide scraps found by Theman at Wind's Home Paddock which was thought to have been abandoned the past hundred turns or so.  Still, Theman found recent signs of occupation plus the old hide scraps with a map of Gianfar with all major craft halls, the Hold and the Weyr locations marked on it, and the smudged letters JTML. Given this map that is clearly Gianfar, it is possible that the coastline in the map fragment on the earlier hide dropped at the Weyr is of a section of Gianfar coastline.
    - Reports of thefts of various supplies / stores / tools from Smithcraft, from Ardrhys's uncle while on his journey to the Weyr with one of the tithe trains, from holders at Far Cry cothold and Sea's Cry cothold (along the sea and mainly a fisher cothold).  A strange ship, ignoring the common rules off the sea, was also spotted by Sea's Cry.

While it is still not certain that all of the above are related, most of the Harper Quintet are of that view, and well as concern that this may be a organized movement, something generally not found in this scale on Gianfar.

I am in agreement with this view, and am anxiously awaiting more news from the two incognito harpers sent out towards Far Cry and Sea's Cry cotholds.  We have heard that they have passed the last drum relay station out that direction.  Due to the apparent use of drum codes in the earliest hide scraps with the JTML code, the Drum Master has instituted several new drum codes for us (Harpers) to use in communicating about matters surrounding these incidents.  The new codes are being hand-delivered to the various drum relay stations.

The research into the recent past records looking for mention of strangers that may be pertinent to the current circumstances has not been too fruitful yet.  The most obvious recent strangers are Qatalina and Theman.  Personally, I have gotten to know both of them, and believe that they are both honorable people.  On the other hand, Qat was most upset on finding out she would have to stay here, and Theman's arrival and past were shrouded in mystery (and still are to some extent, but he has recently began making some mention of events in his past, prior to coming here, and they do support what we were able to learn about him, that he had in fact been trained in Beast Craft. Of the two, Theman has had the most opportunity to explore further around the island, while looking for good pasture for raising goats, as well as being present when the flits dropped the hide scraps, and also at Wind's Home Paddock where additional materials were found.  Qat's interest and enthusiasm in Dolphin Craft appear to be very genuine, but there is always the possibility that she is using that as a cover.  While I want to be able to cross both off the list, until we receive more information, it seems like I need to leave them at least marginally on the list.

Further back, is Karl.  He was before my time, but I have heard stories of some of his exploits, particularly his kidnapping of MasterSmith Wyn.  Supposedly he disappeared after the MasterSmith was found and rescued.  So, is he still alive? Did he return to the mainland or some other island?  Did he go into hiding here on Gianfar where he has been turning people against the Hold and the Weyr?  I imagine that, where ever he may be, he may still have a lot of resentment towards Lady Varian.

Even further back, is there anyone still on Gianfar who may still have resentments over Lady Varian becoming Lord Holder?  I have heard some hints that there may have been some opposition at that time, from some of the extended family.

An apprentice has just knocked on my door, informing me that Learn Master Tristin has requested that I join him and the rest of the Harper Quintet for a meeting.  Perhaps some new information has been found that will help in weeding out speculations from truths. or that will help us put the size of this concern in better perspective.
