RP Rules

  • There is no prescribed style of play. ('Whatever works') Anything from short 'bullet' form to long-paragraph form is permitted. But please try not to mix & match styles in a scene.
  • NO godmoding, autoing, metagaming or teflons(if you don't know what those are, you need to take an RP class - we can recommend the one at NCI, we sponsor it)
  • Keep 'mature' or 'adult' play out of sight! (Our sims are rated 'mature', not 'adult'. If you don't know the difference, find out.)
  • NO PvP combat (except by prearrangement) - RP'd spontaneous brawls are one thing, but duelling doesn't happen on Pern.
  • Absolutely NO deaths (except by prearrangement and admin permission)
  • An RP admin or RP lead's word is final during play. Argue later. Feel free to submit any RP you think is questionable to the appropriate RP lead or admin, after the event.
  • If you do decide to argue, the RP admins will almost always have the last word. If they don't, the estate owner will. (It probably won't change anything, but maybe you'll feel better.)
  • Redo's and restarts are allowed (when appropriate - not a good idea during Threadfall, for instance!) Needs the agreement of everyone concerned, unless it's the decision of an RP admin.
  • The website governs the overall storyline. Depart from it at your peril. (Otoh, add to it and you'll be a hero!)
  • If you haven't passed your 'entry' interview yet, you don't yet have a main character.
  • Only your main character (the one on your character sheet) has a 'history' - but you can 'NPC' other characters (let people around you know when you're doing this, either by changing avatar or by telling everyone or by wearing a titler). You can also bring in an alt if you wish to play a second main character.
  • Dolphins and Firelizards are always NPC.
  • Except when approved by Weyr admins, only Dragons & Riders may play NPC Dragons, and only Dragons & Weyrfolk (including unhatched Dragons and unImpressed Riders) may play NPC Riders. Dragons & riders still in Weyrling training or not yet Impressed cannot fly Thread or Mating flights, even as NPC's, without Weyr admin permission.

Rules for Visitors to Gianfar

Visitors ARE welcome to join in the RP.
Just explain that you are a visitor who has come through the Rift. No 'observer' tags required. But we do assume you’ve read & understood our RP rules.
  • You are welcome to join in conversations, meals, dances and events, as your out-of-sim character of choice. And to come back again (and again).
  • You won't be asked (and please don’t offer!) to do anything crucial, like deliver a vital message or fight Thread.
  • If you stand out in Threadfall you won't get hurt (but you may get moved on to make room for Thread-fighting dragons!).
  • And, please - no teleporting or going between, while in RP. (It’s ok if you’re OOC. Going OOC just to tp & go IC again will get you ejected.)
No weapons, not even display-only. No combat systems. No metered combat.
This should really be 'no scripted weapons'. But, since we can't tell if that sword of yours is just for show or can be used, and since scripted weapons are really laggy - sorry, you'll have to leave that Hellfire blade at home. And we don't usually do PvP combat on Gianfar (except by prearrangement), it's not part of our RP.
Your non-Pern RP is suspended when you arrive.
Kajirae lose their collars, vampires lose their thirst, jedi lose their connection to the Force, dragons lose their fire, redshirts lose their phasers and communicators... you get the picture. If your master, captain, king or whatever on another RP tells you you must or cannot do something, whatever it is, it does NOT apply while you are in our universe. While you're here, our laws supersede any external agreements you have made. No matter what your owner, vampire clan king or Gorean master thinks. After you leave... that's none of our business.
If you don't have wings, you can't fly.
This is a world of dragons, where humans have to walk on the ground. Even Superman's powers fade under Rukbat's rays.

Accounts that fail to follow the rules, or disrupt the RP, may be ejected and/or banned. There's not much of an appeal process - you can ask the estate owners to review your case, but they're unlikely to overrule one of their hand-picked Guardians, who will have reported the circumstances to them (with chatlogs) in any case. However, if you are banned, you are generally welcome to try again in a different alt. Only in extreme cases (deliberate griefing, for example) are bans extended to all known alts of the account concerned.

We try to keep these simple, not to mention obvious...

General sim rules

RP zone: 1000m
The roleplay area is the space between 0 and 1000m on the sims. Gianfar's rules apply here. There is only one OOC zone: the 'welcome area', aka the Rift or the Dome, on Kuma. The space under the dome, down to the floor, and inside the 'Entering Role Play' notices, is OOC (although occasionally RP may happen here).
If someone wearing the tag 'Guardian' or 'Guardian of Gianfar' asks you to do something, do it.
Not all the Guardians are players, but all the Guardians are estate and/or group managers. If they ask you to remove an object, change your hair or leave the sim, there's a reason. They can evict and ban you, and return your objects - they don't have to ask, they're being polite. (Pretending to be a Guardian is a banning offence, and may be AR'd as Griefing.)

If you don't like what a Guardian did, you can appeal to the Owners. But you might want to think about just who appointed the Guardians, first.

No (humanoid) child avatars. (except at advertised times)
Not our rule - since everyone on SL is (in theory) over 18, and the Hold and Weyr should be full of children, we'd love to have them. But our sims necessarily have to be 'mature', because our roleplay can deal with very 'mature' and 'adult' themes. And (for very good reason) Linden Labs has to worry about child avatars on mature sims. So, no children, except when we make the sims PG for a few hours.
No magic. No high technology.
If you're a cyborg that needs tech to survive, then that will still work. But your super-duper jetpack won't, and nor will those magical flower footprints your fairy av leaves behind. These are low-lag sims, we just can't afford to host your pretty-but-irrelevant scripts, sorry. And, vampires... your thirst dried up when you arrived. It'll be waiting for you when you leave. Trying to bite anyone here is an automatic ban.
Locked doors mean 'no entry'!
If a door is locked, the area on the other side is being rented by someone who wants their privacy. Respect that, please.
No voice (except on rare occasions, and by specific people)
We don't usually disable voice here - it's a useful tool, and can be used, for instance, to allow Harpers to sing. But, in general use, it disrupts RP and makes 'suspension of disbelief' that much harder. So, unless you're a player with a role that needs it, or attending an OOC voiced meeting, please keep your mikes off.

Individual sim rules

Shaula

This is the 'dragon sim', home to Threadfall and the dragons of Shaula Weyr. It needs to be very low-lag (for an occupied RP sim!) to perform its function.
Objects
Please keep permanent rezzes to a minimum, and stay within allocated limits. Please descript objects where possible - ask for advice if you need it; it's surprising (to non-scripters) how many scripts aren't needed once they've set the fire going, the wheel turning or the water moving.
Scripts
As far as possible, scripts should be compiled as Mono, should avoid using 'active' events like listens in favour of 'passive' events like touches, and where possible be kept inactivated. Over-active scripted objects may be removed, at the discretion of the sim owner.
Poseballs
Personal poseballs should be derezzed when not in use. (We understand this isn't always possible.)
Animals
Permanently rezzed scripted animals need the personal approval of the sim owner. (Consider this a 'no pets' policy.)

Kuma

This is the 'home' sim for much of the RP. Threadfall happens here, but - partly as an experiment - this sim is not under the restrictions that Shaula operates under.
Objects
Please stay within allocated limits. Please descript objects where possible - ask for advice if you need it; it's surprising (to non-scripters) how many scripts aren't needed once they've set the fire going, the wheel turning or the water moving.
Scripts
As far as possible, scripts should be compiled as Mono, should avoid using 'active' events like listens in favour of 'passive' events like touches. However, scripts are not required to be inactivated.
Poseballs
Personal poseballs may be left out.
Animals
In-theme animals are permitted. The owner has sole discretion to remove animals or request their removal.

Tyl, Etamin

Our 'expansion pack'...
Objects

Animals
Permanently rezzed scripted animals need the personal approval of the sim owner. (Consider this a 'no pets' policy.) However, members of Beast/Herdcraft on Tyl, and Fisher/Dolphincraft or dolphins on Etamin, may rezz animals as required by their own faction rules, or just to make the place look better.

This is a summary of the sim rules. For the details, see the individual articles under Rules. However, be warned that getting too technical with the rules is likely to get you banned... we're not really into long courtroom scenes!

Estate Rules:

  • No (humanoid) child avatars (except when the sim is G);
  • No high technology, no magic;

  • If a door is locked, don’t go in.

Visitor rules:

  • You ARE welcome to join in RP. (It’s not compulsory. Read the RP rules, though.)
  • But you CANNOT change a storyline or perform a service (eg. delivering a message).
  • No weapons. Ever. (Includes ‘natural’ weapons like dragonfire, fangs.
  • You aren’t a slave, you’re not subject to any outside will (while you’re here).
  • You aren’t a vampire, you don’t have a thirst for blood or a hunger for souls (while you’re here).
  • No wings mean no flying. (But most of this sim is underground anyway.)
  • No teleporting or going between, while in RP. (It’s ok if you’re OOC. Going OOC just to tp & go IC again will get you ejected.)

  • Dolphins and firelizards are always NPC.
