Title: Practice Hold RP - Petitions
Post by: Varian on July 20, 2008, 04:38:00 AM
I think it's about time we started some RP. (Any arguments? No? Good. Then I won't have to execute anybody just yet...  :) )

So let's start with a little practice, because <insert deity of choice> knows, I could use some!

(incidentally, this is Soo's idea. So, obviously, it's a very, very good one, and you really want to take part, right?)

Petition Time in the Hold

The Lord Holder and her Steward will be available to Accept Petitions, Give Judgments, and Redress Grievances, at the following Times:

Tuesdays, 6:00pm SLT, 1 hour (longer if necessary)
Saturdays, 8:30am SLT, 1 hour (probably not much more than that, I have a standing date with a market and a library)
...and probably a third session, more convenient to those DownUnder - I keep changing my mind about the time...

The RP area is the Hold Office and the Hold Main Entrance (on the dome level). Going outside the entrance, up/down the stairs, or taking the tunnels to north or south (merchants & residences), takes you out of the RP. Conversely, walking into this area makes you part of the RP. (I'll post warning signs for visitors.)

Rules

NO voice chat; because (a) not everyone can hear, and (b) it's a bit disconcerting to hear, say, a Texan, a 'Strine and a Scouse, all supposedly born on the same island... (also (c), I can hear it, but this PC has no mike - the next one will fix that little problem  ;D )

Nothing in the practice RP is carried into the main game (unless it's really good, and then we pass it along to Soo for inclusion, or write it into a backstory)

No flying.

Because this is practice, imo, keeping other people's tags visible could be a good idea. (In full play, much more fun to turn them off.  :) )

Petitioners can play their PCs, NPCs, or any character they care to make up on the spot (this is practice). Must make sense, though; dragons & firelizards wouldn't have any reason to petition the Hold, and the Holder won't hear Craft disputes. (There's a suggestion in - I think it's Masterharper, but I could be wrong - that the Harper adjudicates minor inter-Craft disputes, and if that doesn't settle the matter, it goes to full Conclave.  Not that it matters here.)

Being a practice run, we expect do-overs; both redo's and replaying the same scene differently. Players should ask whenever they feel the plot is getting away from them.

Anyone who expects me to wait while they type a four-page speech will be executed. Painfully. If it's a long petition, put it on a notecard, I read fast. (And Lady Varian may not bother with more than the first & last sentences, anyway.)

Likewise, god-moding anyone (especially me) is effectively suicide (unless your name is Soo  ;) ). If it's accidental, I'll only call the Spanish Inquisition. (Because nobody expects...)

Also, making fun of newbie RPers... considering that your most excellent Lady Holder is one, that might not be the best idea. Trust me on this. Only person gets to make fun of anyone she feels like is me.

We can either play it by ear, or discuss the outline first and then play. Whatever works best for people. The training area (immediately outside the Hold entrance) can be used for workup, if you need prep. We can also critique afterwards, for anyone who wants - but anyone who plans on doing detailed textual analysis of the chatlogs, see 'execution' comment above. I get impatient.  :)

Characters required:

Holder - Varian
Steward - Jaxx
Harper - Ludo or Zamdie, if available (other Harpers welcome)
Guard(s) - see below
Petitioner(s)/Accused/Accusers - that would be you, gentle reader...

Guard is an NPC position - volunteer, you'll get the job (for the RP only). If we don't have volunteers for a scenario that needs guards, we'll pretend.

Scenarios I'm looking for:

A merchant or crafter who believes they haven't been paid by the Hold;
Neighbour disputes - land boundaries, who owns the prize wherry caught by one Holder on another's land, noisy neighbours, etc.;
Someone allegedly caught thieving (ideally, needs someone to play a guard);
Request to build or demolish a wall in the Hold, or create a window;
Request to open a store;
Employer/employee disputes - breakages deducted from pay, bonuses withheld, failure to fulfil contract;
Request that the Hold take up some dispute with a Craft - complaint about Weaver cloth or Smith metalwork (these are unlikely to be granted, of course);
Rider (not Weyr leadership, they have other channels) complaint that a trader or Holder has shortchanged him/her, or just failed to show due respect.

And anything else that sounds reasonable.

We'll assemble in the training area shortly (10 mins?) before RP start time, to get the running order sorted out (assuming we have enough people for a running order to be required... if we don't, I may just go sit in the office and pout a lot - not a pretty sight). Since we expect to stop & start a lot, late arrivals will be accommodated (being late won't get you out of this...). I guarantee that anyone who turns up will get some RP time, somehow, barring server crashes or my net going down. If you don't have an idea for a scenario, we'll find one. Remember, I need the practice, too!

Oh, and if anyone wants to discuss any other matters - Hold affairs, suggestions (RP or otherwise), offers to help out (volunteers always welcomed with open arms and a scrubbing brush), anything you think I'd be interested in hearing/don't want to bother Soo with/think I'm an easier touch for (yeah, riiight...) - bring it up after the Tuesday RP, or in any spare time after the Saturday RP (I will want to be offline by 0930, unless it's raining!)

Ok, any questions? No? Good. I need some sleep.  8)

Varian taps the microphone. Ahem. Everyone paying attention this time?

Good.

Excuses, excuses...

Thanks to Jaxx, Edwin & Wyn for turning up - and those who said they would, but didn't, well, "I have a little list" (The Mikado, Gilbert & Sullivan). Not that I'm into threats or blackmail or anything...  :D

Anyway, if you want to RP but can't make the times I've set up, either IM me or (better) leave a message in this thread, suggesting a more convenient time. I'm surprisingly flexible. (But that's another story.  ;) )

Next scheduled opportunities not to be in my bad books - and, (slightly) more importantly, to get a head start on Gianfar RP - are Saturday and next Tuesday. If you can't make it, and you're not currently actively involved with getting Gianfar ready to open, propose a better time. Or ask me, or Jaxx, or one of the Craft leaders, what you can do to help. (We'll find something.  :) ) It's going to be really boring around here if we (meaning Soo, mainly) get all this work done, and nobody wants to play...

I have some notes to make. Talk amongst yourselves...

Varian wanders off, making notes on a little list, and humming under her breath "... only suffer/to ride on the buffers/of a Parliamentary train..."

To Varian, Lady Holder of Gianfar Hold, Ludo Merit sends greetings;
I plan to be present to present a petition at six Tuesday. My grandparents willed me their room in the hold, the most southwesterly room, and I have written to Masterharper Meissa asking to be allowed to stay there while completing my Harper apprenticeship. I seek your permission also. Further, I would like to continue trading in the Hold as my grandparents did, though I will not be sailing to the mainland myself to obtain goods, as they did. Their stall is the one under the stairs on the bottom level, called Your Mark's Worth.

My family may show up and argue that they should get the room or the trader stall. However, I will bring my grandparents' written wills when I submit my petition.

Thank you very much. I look forward to serving Gianfar Hold as I am able. Ludo Merit

To Varian, Lady Holder of Gianfar Hold.

I humbly beg your forgiveness for my absence from this past Saturday's role play practice.
Though I know it is no excuse, I was unable to attend due to the pressure of work.
I await your summons to receive the punishment I so richly deserve.

Your obedient servant
Cal Blue.

I have been advised that the Weyr might not be too keen on me disciplining a dragon or rider... which is tough for them, when it's my RP   8)  But you're in my good books, you sent an apology via Wyn.  Others may not be quite so lucky... :)

At last, a successful RP...  :)

My thanks to everyone who turned out. Even if most of you hadn't read any of my excellent and surprisingly literate posts!

And especial thanks to Ludo & Seshat, who provided excellent foils for our first serious RP in Gianfar. Ludo provided the scenario - see above - and Seshat played her Masterweaver against my Lord Holder... I think we all learned from the experience!  ;D  And Wendy's drudge alt is a delight - I look forward to working with her again!

And some of the things we learned - or at least, some of my ideas - are...

  • No side-chat in IM - if it's in character, it goes in open chat
  • Multiple threads in the play work, probably better than sticking to the main thread. However...
  • Too many conversational threads could kill play.
  • We need a Guardian on-call, in case of troublemakers
  • Next time, there will be a notecard for those who turn up but aren't reading this thread - I'm not spending an hour explaining basic backstory again!
  • People who aren't serious about RP will be asked to leave. (maybe I should put up signs around the prep area?)
  • Players who post scenarios in this thread will have priority over those who turn up on the day, with or without scenarios

Ok, all clear on that?

Good.  ::)

I'm (reluctantly) cancelling next Saturday's RP - Jaxx & I have other engagements that day. And, based on feedback received, I think it needs to be retimed - moved later in the morning or early afternoon - before we bring it back. Suggestions for a new time, please, in this thread. (Note that the Saturday RP is aimed specifically at our UK/EU membership.)

If you're very unlucky, I might even be able to schedule something this week, on Thursday or Friday morning (SLT; evening UK/Europe)... we'll see.  :-\

The next scheduled RP session is next Tuesday at 6 pm SLT. Turn up around 5:45 if you have a scenario you'd like to try, or 5:55 if you'd just like to play. (We could have used a few 'witnesses' and 'family members' for Ludo's scenario). I won't guarantee places for latecomers, unless they've contacted either Jaxx or me beforehand with a good (or particularly inventive) excuse. Or unless I feel like it.

A reminder: anyone who doesn't read this website will be out of the loop for RP. It seems not enough people have figured this out, so - since you're reading this - please make sure your DoP friends understand. RP will be coordinated (and postmortemed) through the website; Gianfar RP is going to be a whole order of magnitude more complex (and more enjoyable) than anything else in SL. And we're going to need your participation - and your feedback - to make this work. Therefore, the website. Cool, huh?  8)

 :) Whee!

You know, we're definitely getting good at this...  :D

Thanks to everyone who came! (And we actually found roles for dolphins and dragons!) I would name everyone, but we had so many, and I forgot to run my radar over you all...

For those of you who didn't bother to turn up (yes, I know, you were sleeping or working or something else RL, yada yada  ::) ), we had a nice little scenario in which Wendy & Randy were stowaways on one of Ed's ships. Now we can have not one, not two, but three followup scenarios - one in which the still-unidentified Randy is returned from the Weyr as unsuitable, one in which I decide what to do with Wendy (and who she really is), and one - for the fishers & dolphins - in which the circumstances of Wendy's disappearance are investigated...  now that is how scenarios should play out!  ;D

One thing, though... next time, I'm going to appoint someone to deal with wandering visitors - keep them out of local chat, explain what's going on. (Thanks for that, Wyn!) That's something we won't need for simwide RP.

And the next time? I'm thinking Thursday... noon for the UK crowd, 6pm for the US?  :-\

If you can't make those times, post here and let me know when you can make it. We've still a bit of ground to cover by September 6 (http://www.gianfarpeaks.com/public/index.php?topic=179.0).

But shards, we're doing good!  :)

No problem, RL happens...  there will be more chances.  I'm thinking Saturday around 1pm slt (9pm BST)?  ???

You missed another good RP, though!

Next run for the US contingent is 6pm tonight.

PS. Next time, leave him a piece of raw steak and a slice of bread, and let him figure it out for himself..  :)

Then he can cook his own!   :D

(I'm strictly a 10-minute cook; give me boiling water, a preheated oven, and ten minutes in a decently-equipped kitchen, and I'll either have a meal ready or in the oven - and nothing from frozen except maybe the veggies, or the ice cream in my souffle omelettes. However, real chefs, prepared to spend hours in a kitchen just to make one course, still amaze me.)

I'm about to run out of time for scheduling daytime (SLT) RP on weekdays, but I will try to set up one more, noonish, on Monday or Tuesday. After that... well, I still need a Headwoman, and if she happens to be good at RP and available on UK time...

Ok, time to schedule some more practice RP - just 'cos those of you who turn up are getting good, doesn't mean I'm going to let anyone else escape...  8)

Try this...

Tuesday:
1pm SLT (9pm BST)
6pm SLT (9pm ET)

Thursday:
1pm SLT
6pm SLT

Saturday:
1pm SLT

I can also schedule a 10am (6pm BST) on Tuesday or Thursday, and I'm open to running a late-night (SLT) RP, say around 9pm SLT Friday (2pm Sat in Sydney, I think) for those unfortunate enough to inhabit the Antipodes. (Just kidding!) But I'll only do this if people ask for it, here or inworld. After this week, no more daytime (SLT) sessions run by me, I'm afraid. (Cries of "Oh no!' from the audience... please! )

And on Friday... I'd like to run our first live Hold RP. This will be restricted to players who:
(a) have character sheets (PC or NPC) which they've given to Nekome...
(b) are ready to play those characters...
(c) post here to say you want to play...
(d) ...and at what times you'll be available.
(Note: not restricted to Holders - dragons, dolphins, runnerbeasts, crafters, etc., all welcome!  8) )

If there's enough interest, I'll schedule a time/times and we'll figure out a scenario.

We have a serious Hold RP coming up, in conjunction with the Weyr & others, and prior to the Gather... I'd like to get a little practice in first!  :)

Varian, I'll be happy to check this Thread on Thursday for you and run it against my background files, so you know who is trying to slip by with no sheet. Cause thats a no no.
For those people who don't have a sheet yet. I can make time for a character creation sheet, and/or an intro to rp class IF its wanted. I don't know what time the most people could get to, but I'm flexible, and will make just about anything work as long as I know in advance. I stopped the classes before when people stopped coming, that was 3 months and about 100 members ago, so it may be time. Let me know if you would  :)

I'd love practice RP, and a character sheet.   :)

I'm not sure what SLT is, but I'm usually free in the evenings, 5 - 9 PST.  And all weekend, generally.

Thank you!

Lady Varian, feel free to convert the woman in red to a character to give to somebody, or whatever. I hope to be too busy being a wingleader to play a lost/kidnapped/runaway girl. Although being weak and self absorbed was a lot of fun.

Thanks - I know how much work you're about to have  :( I don't suppose I'll see my drudge much before the Gather, either...

Ok, I'll reuse that character, but only with someone who I know can RP well.

I did consider cancelling the RP session set for 1pm Saturday, because it now conflicts with one of Buck's two Weyr meetings. And I'd also hoped to make it a live RP session. Instead, there will now be an RP session (possibly live, but probably not, we'll see) after Buck's little announcement - both of them. We'll assemble at around 1:15pm & 8:15pm on Saturday, in the usual place - watch for a DoP group notice.

Next Saturday (23rd), however, hope for live RP - open to any non-Weyr character, PC or NPC who turns up. To take part, you must either have a non-Weyr character sheet filed with Nekome, or be prepared to take whatever NPC I throw at you on the day. (Weyrfolk needn't feel left out - this involves you, too, but I'm not organising that side.) If we can pull this off, we'll have most of Gianfar & Shaula sims (excluding OOC areas) in RP for a while... should be a good trial run!

The time? ... tbd. Watch this space...

 :)

Okay... Tuesday's session was a disaster (and my fault - apologies to all  :'( ), and Thursday's turnout was embarrassing. And we're getting close to the opening date, and other people are beginning to host RPs (I've seen some of the logs  ;) ).

There will be no practice RP on Saturday, for obvious reasons. (anyone not aware of the obvious, go poke around the forum until you find out what we're doing at 2pm on Saturday...)   :-\

I'll hold one final practice RP on Tuesday at 6pm, immediately after Nekome's RP101 class, then I'm going to wrap it up, at least until after the Gather. Between now and the Gather, except for Tuesday's session, the Hold will only arrange live RP events.  :D (But, if anyone else feels like hosting some practice RP in or around the Hold, please just schedule it with myself or Jaxx.)

After the Gather... we'll see if there's a need.  :)

Maybe we should do this.

Have most of us take temp roles for the day... or bring in alts.

Well, my bio's in the bio section.  8)

Jaxx and I did run 'petition days' for a while after opening day, as I recall. Very few people turned up. I wouldn't mind running 'practice' style RPs again, we had some very good scenes, which sometimes fed into the live RP. But we had a much larger population back then. And even so, 'practice RP' would often be Jaxx, me, and a few regulars (which was ok by me, I was a noob at SL RP back then, too; half the idea was for me, the junior admin, to learn by example, from players like Nekome and Jaxx and Wendy - didn't actually expect to teach the stuff I was learning...).

Let's discuss this, see if there's a demand for 'petition days' or 'practice RP' again. Could be a way to show off some of the venues we're not using, at least.
