News: Sunday Meeting notes are here!

Know something we ought to talk about? An idea, a suggestion, a complaint... add it to the Agenda thread, or contact Vee inworld. Even if you can't make the meeting, we'll discuss anything relevant. (And usually a few things that aren't.)

We'll miss you (even those of us who never met you, or only saw you at book signings or conventions). Your stories, your ideas will live on.

Early on in my career as an avatar in Second Life (yes, this is Anne-related, stick around), while attending a class on... something or other, I met a lady with a fire-lizard on her shoulder. Intrigued, I asked her where she got it from, which led, inevitably, to discussion of our mutual fascination with the Pern stories. Which is when she invited me back to her weyr. I looked out from her still-plywood cave, across the incomplete plywood mountains of the weyr bowl, and said 'I'm home'. And I was.

Still am. (More so, now I own the weyr's sim, and 'live' here!)

The plywood's gone now, but I still get a shiver when I look across the bowl of our (imaginary & virtual, and technically far too small & low) Weyr. And think of all the people who were inspired enough, by just one of Anne's worlds, to want to try and build their own little (alternate!) version of it, and to live here as riders and weyrfolk, harpers and holders, and, yes, dragons and dolphins and firelizards... and we're the extreme, the ones geeky or sad or just plain foolish enough to want, for a couple of hours a week, to swap our mundane lives for a world in which electricity is (currently) unknown - but so is war.

It's only a tiny tribute to Anne's work, our few sims lost in the ocean of Second Life. But... it's always been a tribute. That's what our founder, Soo, intended, and I can't conceive of Gianfar any other way.

Thank you, Anne McCaffrey, author, Dragonlady, Grand Master of Science Fiction, and inspiration.

You'd like to be a Dragonrider? A Harper? Perhaps a Dragon searing Thread, or a drudge in the Hold kitchens, or even a Dolphin, guiding ships home... then read on!
